Tune out the noise: why we put a suspension fork on Taos

Adding suspension to a gravel bike shouldn’t make it feel like something else.

The goal was not to turn the Taos into a mountain bike. It was to preserve the speed, efficiency and responsiveness that define a Taos while giving the rider more composure where it's needed.

Forty millimeters of front travel may sound modest compared with a mountain-bike fork, but on gravel it can meaningfully change how the bike behaves. The fork helps absorb repeated impacts from washboard, roots, and loose rocks before they travel through the handlebar and into the rider.

The result is a calmer ride, and rider.

When the rider can maintain a more relaxed grip, the bike is less likely to become unsettled by a poorly placed rock or an unexpected rut.

Suspension is often discussed in terms of comfort, but its effect on control may be even more important. Overall reduction in vibration and impact preserves energy and thus concentration. 

A suspension fork gives the front wheel more freedom to move independently beneath the rider, helping it remain connected to the ground. More consistent front wheel contact can provide more predictable steering and braking, especially on loose or uneven descents.

With added confidence and control, the rider can carry momentum across rougher ground and focus farther ahead.

The Taos was already developed around a modern approach to gravel geometry. Its long reach, low bottom bracket and relatively slack head angle are intended to create stability at speed without making the bike feel slow or difficult to place through tighter terrain. Across the size range, the head angle sits between approximately 68.75 and 69.75 degrees, while 430mm chainstays help retain a responsive feel.

Those proportions become especially valuable when the bike is paired with suspension. The fork complements the character already built into the Taos, rather than compensating for outdated geometry.

A stable front end encourages confidence on steep or loose descents, while the low center of gravity helps the rider feel planted through corners. The short rear center keeps the bike responsive when navigating tighter trails, accelerating out of turns or lifting the front wheel over an obstacle.

There will always be a place for lightweight, rigid gravel bikes built around speed on maintained roads. But gravel is becoming increasingly diverse.

Riders are linking together routes that cross traditional category boundaries. Events are incorporating rougher and more technical terrain. Larger tires, wide-range drivetrains, dropper posts, and front suspension forks have already expanded what riders expect a drop-bar bike to handle.
